New currency
in Suriname
Surinamese Dollar introduced
On January 01, 2004 the Surinamese Guilder(SRG) was exchanged into
the Surinamese dollar(SRD). As of this date the dollar issued by
our monetary authorities is our new legal instrument of payment
in the Republic of Suriname. The adjoining table precisely indicates
which dollar value corresponds with a specific guilder note. The
amount that they represent equals their face value divided by 1000.
It is thus possible to use the existing guilder banknotes to make
dollar payments.

The currency notes are manufactured by the Dutch company Johan
Enschedé & Sons and are available at the Central Bank
of Suriname. Because of safety matters the delivery of the banknotes
are delayed to February 2004.
There will be a transitional phase. It will take a couple of months
for the Surinamese entrepreneurs and consumers to get adjusted to
this new currency. Most of the shops have changed their pricing
labels and consumers are using their old coins again, which have
regained their value.
