Tour in
the spotlight: Nickerie the West route
The district Nickerie,
is situated in the west of Suriname, adjacent to neighbouring
country Guyana. The area is characterized by the extensive polders
and beautiful rice farmlands. You will imagine yourself being in
Indonesia and the Netherlands. Nickerie is also known as the rice
barn of Suriname. It is mostly the Javanese and Hindostani
population groups that are active in the rice sector, a big source
of income for Suriname. In this mainly rice district, a lot of
bananas are cultivated also. Nickerie is sparsely populated and most
of the people (7500 people) live in the quiet, pleasant district
capital Nieuw-Nickerie.
